Double Layer/Dual Layer disc is a rewritable disc with 8.5 GB capacity on a single side (2.6 GB for 8 cm discs). It complies with the +RW Alliance (Double Layer) or DVD-Forum (Dual Layer) specifications.
The dual/double recording layer has been achieved by creating a new substrate layer that sits between each of the recording layers. This technology allows the laser beam to record on both layers. Once the first layer is recorded, the laser refocuses to record on the second layer.
DVD+R is a recordable disc with 4.7 GB capacity. It complies with the +RW-Alliance specifications.
